What is periodontal care?

Periodontal care is an important part of oral health care. Nearly 75% of adults have some stage of periodontal disease, or gum disease. At Lightway Family Dentistry, we strive to keep your mouth in optimal health by providing excellent care for your gums as well as your teeth.

How can I prevent gum disease?

Flossing between your teeth daily is one of the best ways to prevent gum disease. Brushing twice a day also helps to prevent gum disease from infecting your teeth. It is always easier to prevent disease than treat it once it has started.

How is gum disease treated?

When gum disease is in its early stages, Dr. Glenn Edens can help correct the disease through a process called root planing and scaling. Planing and scaling is a procedure that cleans the area between the gums and teeth all the way to the roots. The dentist can use anesthesia in order to numb your mouth while performing the procedure, which is fairly painless and causes minimal discomfort. After surgery, the gums should heal quickly and become firm and pink.
